The MABIT-programme is an industrial R&D program for Marine Biotechnology in northern Norway.
MABIT's main objectives:
- To contribute to the increased value of the fishery, aquaculture and biotechnological industries.
- To coordinate and strengthen biotechnological activities in the region of northern Norway.
- To stimulate activities at relevant companies/research institutions such as cross-cooperation, R&D, basic process-/pilot production, and networking.
- Competence promotion/building and networking activities: Supporting the formation and growth of biotechnological competence/cooperation at organizations in northern-Norway in an effort to improve value creation derived from local resources.
MABIT has 4 main focus areas:
- Marine bioprospecting: The characterization and commercialization of bioactive compounds from the marine environment. This is done in cooperation with other businesses and R&D institutions in northern Norway.
- Aquaculture and fish health products: The creation of products such as vaccines and feed. This includes developing methods and competence for the introduction of new aquatic species, particular those able to breed in northern Norway.
- Utilization of marine by-products: The development and production of high-value products for use in nutrition, food supplements, feed ingredients, the pharmaceutical and/or technological industry, etc.
- Biotechnology projects from all sectors: Biotech research and development of technology that can lead to commercial application and/or supprt existing industry
